Charles Eames is one of the most important designers of the 20th century. His colleagues were Harry Bertoia, Eero Saarinen, Florence Knoll and Ray Kaiser whom he married in 1941. The Eames collaborated with Saarinen on a molded-plywood chair that won two prizes in 1940. In 1946, Eames was given MOMA’s first one man’s show.
Charles and Ray’s interest in new techniques led them to experiment with fiberglass reinforced plastics with a one-piece fiberglass-shell chair, which was much admired. They worked closely with the manufacturer Herman Miller throughout the fifties and sixties.
