Josef Hoffman (1870-1956)
Born in Pirnitz, Moravia (now Chechoslovakia) in 1870. He studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and established his own office in 1898. Hoffman taught at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule from 1899 until 1936, while creating designs for interior and exteriors for the homes of painters and many others. Hoffman's use of geometric and cubist forms in his designs are rudimentary principles found in modern furniture design.
